Roscommon & District League Round Up by Vincent Brookes

The Roscommon and District League representative side are still on course to make the play off stages of the Oscar Traynor Cup competition following a 1 – 1 draw with the Galway League at the Curragh Grounds Ballinasloe on Saturday evening. While the Roscommon and District League were hoping for a win from this game they had to settle for a draw from an evenly contested game.
Overall the sides created few real chances with well organised defences and two very good gaol keepers playing the major part in the outcome. Noel Fallon Enda Kenny Des Hope Cormack Clogher Andy Higgins James Coyne and Shane Duffy were the best of the home side while James Keane Colm O Donavan and Gerry Dolan played well for the Galway side. In the first half there were few shots on target but Darragh Concannon and Andy Higgins came nearest to scoring for the Roscommon and District League but were denied by James Keane in the Galway goals.

The Galway League took the lead with thirteen played in the second half. Just when it looked like the home would score the ball was cleared and Galway caught the home defence out of position. Gerry Dolan got past Peter Keighery on the right wing and his cross to the far post was volleyed to the net by substitute Jason Finn.

With thirty-four played Andy Higgins burst through the Galway defence and was hauled back on the edge of the Galway penalty area. Darragh Concannon gave the Galway keeper no chance with a sweet shot to the bottom corner of the net.
Despite their best efforts neither team could get a winner in the closing stages.

The Roscommon and District League have a home game against the strong Clare league next Sunday at Newbridge and they must win to advance to the next round.

Elsewhere Ballaghaderreen moved into second place in the Premier Division following a 5 – 0 win over bottom side M D Town at Ballaghaderreen. A single strike by Dylan Edwards gave the winners a 1 – 0 half time lead. Dylan Edwards added four more after the break to give Ballaghaderreen a comfortable win.

Newly Promoted St Johns Athletic made the break trough after five minutes when they won a penalty kick after Mike Hannon was taken down. David Mc Donnell scored from the penalty spot. This talented young Lecarrow side defended very well for the remainder of the game and came away with all three points.

Shiven Rovers continue to lead the Norio’s Takeaway Division 1 following a comfortable 7 – 1 win over Rahara Rovers at Rahara. The Newbridge side were 2 – 0 ahead at the break thanks to Eric Walsh and Shane Harkin. The Ballinlough side Lough Harps moved within four points of the Division 2 leaders M D Town when they beat them 2 – 1 at Ballinlough. Rory Maloney gave the Milltown Dunmore side a 1 – 0 lead after seventy seven minutes and only a great save by keeper Rory Mannion denied M D Town a second when he saved a penalty kick seven minutes later.
