Roscommon & District League Round Up by Vincent Brookes

Dysart go top of the Premier Division of the Roscommon and District League following a hard earned 1 – 0 win over title contenders Castlerea Celtic at Dysart. In what was a very open and entertaining game both teams created many good chances and it was a bit unreal that there was only the one goal scored. Dysart were best served by their goalkeeper Noel Fallon and John Waldron, Kenny Doolin, Andy Higgins and Ferdie Coyne. However it was their top striker Johnny Coyne who scored the only goal of the game. With fifty six minutes played he turned quickly on the edge of the penalty area before volleying to the Castlerea Celtic net.

Teams from Divisions one and two were involved in the first round of the Connacht Cup competition but it was not a good day for the Roscommon and District league teams.

Loughglynn United were 2 – 0 winners over the Galway League side Barna/Furbo at Loughglynn. Mark O Brien was the man of the match and he scored their first after twenty eight minutes and a second with eighteen minutes left to play.

Division 1 side Shiven Rovers were beaten 2 – 1 at home by the Tuam side Dynamo Blues. Joey Horan scored for the losers.
Kilkerrin United lost 7 – 1 to the Galway side West United. Keith Mc Mahon converted a penalty kick to keep Kilkerrin in touch until the second half when the flood gates opened.

The Castleplunket side C P Ajax were involved in a nine goal thriller at Tarmon but they were eventually beaten 6 – 3 by a powerful Corofin side. Paul Mee scored two and Gerry Leech one for C P Ajax.

The Ballinlough side Lough Harps were beaten 3 – 0 away to Ballyhaunis. Glen Celtic were beaten by a last minute goal away to Kiltimagh/Knock. Daniel Smith had earlier given the Glenamaddy side a 1 – 0 lead early in the second half before the home side scored twice.

Ahascragh United had their first win of the season when they beat Rahara Rovers 4 – 0 in their Division 1 game at Rahara.
Colin Concannon converted a penalty kick for the winners with thirty played after Kenny English was fouled. Kenny English scored a fine solo goal just before half time and with nine minutes played in the second half he combined with Darren Harewood to set up Joe Hunt who made it 3 – 0 for Ahascragh. Darren Harewood added their fourth when he got on the end of a Colin Concannon cross.

The Milltown Dunmore side MD Town continue to lead the Killeen’s Sports Fields Division 2 after beating Moore United 2 – 1 away at Moore. Dylan Corless and Kevin Varley scored for the winners and Shane Mulvey replied for the losers.

Skyvalley Rovers are a point behind the leaders but with a game less played. They beat Cloonfad United 5 -1 at Taughmaconnell. Sean Kenny Andrew Phelan Mike Lynch Pakie Moore and Will Redmond scored for the winners and Sean Ruane replied for Cloonfad United.

The Roscommon and District League wish to extend their Deepest Sympathy to the Family and Friends of the late Marie Corcoran. Marie and her family have contributed greatly to the success of the St Johns Athletic Club. As a mark of respect games involving both St Johns Athletic teams were called off on Sunday
May she rest in peace.
