Roscommon & District League Round Up by Vincent Brookes

The second round of the FAI Junior Cup took centre stage on Sunday and by and large it was a good day for the Roscommon and District league teams.

Roscommon and District League Premier Division side Castlerea Celtic had an impressive 3 – 1 away win over the Mayo Super League side Ballyglass. Nathan Bligh broke the deadlock when he won the ball outside the penalty area before slamming it to the Ballyglass net. Ronan Curran set up Peter Farrell to score their second and Curran then won and converted a penalty kick to ensure a place for Castlerea Celtic in the third round.

Premier Division side Dysart had an impressive 4 – 0 win over the Mayo League Premier side Glenhest Rovers at Dysart. James Coyne and Paddy Neary gave them a 2 – 0 half time advantage and Curtis McCormack and Niall Corbett added two more after the break.

Moore United made the long journey to Achill and came away with a 4 – 1 win against the Mayo Premier “B” side. Kevin Kenny scored two and Mark Nicholson and Michael Collins scored one each.

Roscommon and District League Division 1 side Brazukas had a really good 3 – 0 win over the Mayo Premier Side Bangor Hibs at Bangor. Marcos gave them a 1 – 0 half time lead and Vando added two more after the break.

Cloonfad United were unlucky to be beaten 2 – 1 away to the Sligo Super League side, Strand Celtic. Ryan Merchant gave them a 1 – 0 lead after fifteen minutes. The home side levelled the game after thirty six and were awarded a disputed penalty kick five minutes from full time which they converted.

In an all Roscommon and District League clash Premier side Skyvalley Rovers edged out newly promoted M D Town 2 – 1 after extra time. James Maloney gave the Milltown Dunmore side a first half lead and Michael Lynch levelled the game with ten minutes left in normal time. Alan Naughton scored the winner five minutes into the first period of extra time.

The Glenamaddy side Glen Celtic travelled to Ballina but were unfortunate to be beaten 3 – 2 on pens after the game finished 2- 2 after extra time.

Ballinasloe Town and Ballaghaderreen each received a walk over from Iorras Aontaithe and Straid & Foxford United respectively.

The Division 2 side Roscommon United were beaten 7 – 1 at home by the Mayo Super League side Ballyheane. Jamie Bracken scored for the inexperienced home side who were not expected to over come one of the top sides in the Mayo league.

Kilkerrin United closed the gap on Division 1 joint leaders Shiven Rovers and Brazukas with a hard earned 1 – 1 draw away to Ballinasloe. Jason Ward gave Kilkerrin a 1-0 lead with sixty four played and Greg Keighery levelled the game with eight minutes left to play.

Ballaghaderreen were 2 – 1 winners over a luckless Ahascragh United at Ahascragh. Lee Johnston won and converted a penalty kick for Ahascragh United in the first half. James Brady replied for Ballaghaderreen with seventeen minutes left to play and Dillon Kennedy won all three points when he scored their second from close range with just five minutes left to play.

The race for the Division 2 Championship is really close with only one point separating MD Town, Skyvalley Rovers and KC Celtic.
Leaders MD Town were beaten 2 -1 at home by Skyvalley Rovers. The Taughmaconnell side took the lead through Sean Kenny early in the game and David Sweeney converted a penalty kick after Mark White was fouled with fifteen minutes left to play. The Milltown Dunmore side pulled one back in the last minute of the game.

The Castleplunket side CP Ajax had an impressive 3 – 1 win away to Moore United and they are just two points behind the leaders. Eric Braz and Paul Mee gave them a 2 – 0 half time lead. Michael Carty pulled a goal back for Moore with Daniel Keavney sealing the three points for the visitors in the second half.

KC Celtic beat St John's Athletic 2 – 1 at Lecarrow in a game that could have gone either way. Alan Devine scored both goals for Tim Broderick's men and Sean Dervin pulled one back for the losers with fifteen minutes left to play.
