Roscommon & District League Round Up by Vincent Brookes.

Due to the bad weather and the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations only three games were played in the Roscommon and District League over the weekend.
In the Raftery’s Oakland Hotel sponsored Premier Division, Boyle Celtic kept their hopes of becoming champions alive with a 3 – 1 win over Kilkerrin United at a very wet and windy Boyle. Brian McDermott gave Kilkerrin United and early lead and they had a couple of chances to add a second before Luka Roddy replied for Boyle Celtic just before half time. Michael Corrigan recorded his eighteenth league goal of the season within five minutes of the restart and Daniel Hughes sealed all three points for Boyle Celtic when he scored their third near the end of the game.

St. John’s Athletic took a major step towards promotion to the Premier Division of the Roscommon and District League when they beat the Castleplunket side CP Ajax 2 – 0 at the League grounds, Lecarrow. The sides were well matched in the first half with both teams having chances to take the lead. With twelve minutes played in the second half an Ultan Kelly cross was headed to the net by Tommy Hurley to bring his league total for the season to fourteen. With seventeen minutes left to play Tommy Hurley returned the favour with Ultan Kelly scoring the all-important second goal. While St. John’s Athletic are nine points behind the leaders Moylough they are just one behind second placed Ballaghaderreen FC with two games less played.

In the Killeen Sports Grounds Division Two, Shiven Rovers beat new side St. Cuan’s United 3 – 2 at Newbridge. Man of the match David Kelly scored twice in the first half to give the winners a 2 – 0 lead at half time. The Castleblakeney side fought back and Darragh Dowd and Luke Concannon had the sides level with twenty minutes left to play. Just when it looked like the game would finish level up stepped David Kelly in the last minute to complete his hat trick and secure all three points for the Newbridge side.

Skyvalley Rovers officially switched on their newly installed Floodlighting System on Friday night before a big attendance at Onagh Park, Taughmaconnell. The Irish International Under sixteen player and Taughmaconnell native Kathlyn Keogh had the honour of cutting the tape.
Having already developed two full size pitches, club house with dressing rooms, meeting rooms, gym, Floodlight Astro Turf Pitch and children's playground, the Club have now nearly reached all its goals in providing the very best facilities available. Well done to all involved.
