The 51st season of the Roscommon and District League got off to a shaky start over the weekend with two of the five games in the Premier Division being postponed due to the Covid virus.
St John's Athletic had an impressive 4 – 3 win away to a Ballaghaderreen side who are sure to be in contention for the Premier Division Championship. The home side were slow to settle and Tommy Hurley took full advanatge when he scored three times in the first twenty minutes of the game for St John's Athletic. Gradually Ballaghaderren gained control of the game and Cathal Horan pulled a goal back with five minutes remaining in the first half. Cian Mc Cann reduced the deficit to a single goal three minutes after the restart and from then on the teams were well matched. Tommy Hurley struck his fourth goal with fifteen left to play and while Usama Israr reduce the deficit with two minutes remaining the Lecarrow side held on to take all three points.
Moore United traveled to Ballymoe F C and two first half goals secured all three points for the visitors. Andy Nevin headed a corner kick to the Ballymoe net after nine minutes of play and the same player finished off a fine passing move six minutes before half time to secure all three points.
Cloonfad United made the short journey to Castlerea and came away with a 3 -1 win. Tiernan Murphy scored for Cloonfad United two minutes into the second half. However the lead only lasted four minutes before Dominic Bligh replied for Castlerea Celtic. A really well struck free kick by Sean Burk restored the Cloonfad lead with sixty six played and David Cunnane added their third with nine minutes left to play.
Next weekend all three divisions of the League will be in action.
