Roscommon and District League Round-up by Vincent Brookes

St. Peter's made it two Cup Semi-Final wins out of two over the weekend when the beat Moylough '79 4 - 3 on Sunday to advance to the Roscommon & District League Challenge Cup Final and a meeting with either Ballinasloe Town or St. John's Athletic in two weeks time.
Premier Division St. Peter's were clear favourites to beat Division Two side Moylough '79 in the Challenge Cup Semi-Final and while the writing was on the wall as early as the third minute when Mark Sherlock headed them in front it was Moylough who regained their composure and were level five minutes later. Good play from captain Michael Kelly and Aridas created an opening for Leo Donnellan and he rifled the ball to the St. Peter's net.
St. Peter's regained the lead after twenty eight minutes when centre half Scott Delaney headed a Darragh Concannon cross to the Moylough net. Moylough continued to battle for every ball but it was to be the Athlone side who stretched their lead through Niall Scullion with twenty six played in the second half. An unfortunate own goal seemed to end any chance of a come back for Moylough but they struck twice in the last five minutes. The first came when Matthew Cheevers turned in a Marcus Finn cross and Cheevers scored again three minutes later following a neat pass by James Fahy. However the final whistle ended any chance of the game going to extra time.

On Thursday evening St. Peter's beat Ballymoe FC 2 – 1 at Kilkerrin to reach the Premier Division Cup Final and as a result they will play Boyle Celtic in the Final next Sunday at the RDFL Grounds, Lecarrow with a 3.00 PM kick off. While St. Peter's were 2 – 0 up at half time they were made to battle all the way following a spirited Ballymoe fight back in the second half. Mike Lee gave the Athlone a 1 – 0 lead after eighteen minutes and ten minutes later Noel McGee added a second. Ballymoe had a player sent off with twenty to play and had a goal ruled out for off side before a brilliantly struck free kick from Damien Goggins gave Ballymoe hope of a come back. However it was not to be and St. Peter's held out for a win.

Congratulations are extended to Cam Celtic (pictured) who won promotion to Division One following a 2 – 0 win over the Castleplunkett side CP Ajax at Lecarrow. This promotion relegation game was all square at half time but within twelve minutes of the restart Keith McLoughlin scored for Cam Celtic. David Cunniffe added their second fifteen minutes later.

In the Masters League Cam Celtic and the Castleblackney side CB Trotters drew 2 – 2 at Cam and the Glenamaddy side Glen Celtic beat Ballinasloe Town 1 – 0 at Glenamaddy.

The Roscommon and District League would like to extend their congratulations to the Ballinasloe Town Football club. They have recently been selected by the FAI as one of the top eight clubs for the last year. The FAI Club of the year will be selected from one of the eight clubs nominated. Best wishes are extended to the club in the final.

The Roscommon and District League would like to extend their deepest sympathy to the Donoghue and Grehan families on the death of Mary Donoghue, Dysart and Agnes Grehan, Brideswell.
Mary Donoghue was mother of a big family who played for and contributed greatly to the sucess of the Dysart Football Club for many years. Agnes Grehan was also the mother of a big family. Like the Donoghue family they made a huge contribution towards the establishment of the Cam Celtic club with many of them playing for the club over a long period. Our condolences are extended to the close family members and their extended family. May these two great ladies rest in peace.
