Roscommon & District League Round Up by Vincent Brookes

The third Round of the FAI Junior Cup took centre stage on Sunday and it proved a day of mixed fortunes for teams from the Roscommon and District league.

Castlerea Celtic knocked out the Mayo Super League side Ballina Town at Castlerea. There were no goals scored in normal or extra time but in the resultant penalty shoot out Castlerea Celtic won on a 6 – 5 score line.

Moore United travelled to the Sligo Leitrim Super League side Strand Celtic and came away with a 4 – 2 win after extra time. The Moore side were the better team through out and took the lead on two occasions only for Strand Celtic to level the game. In extra time substitute Alan Duffy scored twice to seal Moore a place in the fourth round. Kevin Kenny had earlier scored two goals in normal time.

Premier Division joint leaders Dysart beat the Mayo Premier A side Partry Athletic 7 – 1 at Dysart. Karl Garvin, Gareth Sheehy and Niall Corbett scored two each and Paddy Neary added the remainder for an impressive Dysart side.

Skyvalley Rovers were beaten 6 - 0 away to the Mayo Champions Westport United. The visitors were well in the game early on but conceded two very soft scores midway through the half and never really recovered.

Division 1 joint leaders Brazukas beat Ballyhaunis 2 – 1 at Roscommon. It was a great performance from the Brazilian side with Marcos and Marcello scoring their goals in the first half.

Ballinasloe Town were beaten 5 – 2 at home by the Sligo Leitrim Super league side Manor Rangers. Ballinasloe Town had the majority of play and chances but a couple of defensive mistakes at a critical stage in the game cost them dearly. Jordan O'Leary and Darragh Concannon scored for Ballinasloe Town.

Division two side Lough Harps travelled to the Mayo Super league side Claremorris and after a battling display were unlucky to loose in extra time. A Sean Burke goal for the Ballinlough side sent the game to extra time but the home side scored two late goals to advance to the next round.

The Mayo side Kilmore conceded their game to Premier side Ballaghaderreen.

In the Herald Premier Division Ballymoe beat second from bottom side St Johns Athletic 2 – 0 at Lecarrow. Daniel Maloney and Ross Timothy scored their goals.

Cloonfad United beat newly promoted M D Town 2 – 1 at Milltown. Shane Fagan scored for Cloonfad United after half an hour and Tommy Wrynne replied for the Milltown Dunmore side. Luke Mc Dermott got the winner for Cloonfad in injury time.

Shiven Rovers go three points clear at the top of Division 1 following a 5 – 0 win over Ballinasloe Town at Newbridge. Aidan McInerney scored their first after three minutes of play and Padraig Delaney added their second fourteen minutes later. In the Second half McInerney scored his second and third before Joe Horan completed the scoring.

Glen Celtic beat Kilkerrin United 2 – 0 in a local derby game at Glenamaddy. Kieran Truatt scored both goals for the winners from free kicks in the second half.

In Division 2 Moylough 79 had their first win of the season when they beat Skyvalley Rovers 1 – 0 at Moylough. With Robert Muldoon and Michael Kelly in top form the home side picked up all three points when Marcus Finn scored the winner with fifteen minutes left to play.

Roscommon United beat Moore United 5 – 1 at Roscommon. Johnny Tierney scored two and Marco Morelli Jamie Bracken and Liam Cooke added one each. All the goals were scored in the first half.

Cloonfad United drew 1 – 1 with MD Town at Cloonfad. Seamus Culkeen gave M D town a 1 – 0 lead after thirty three minutes and Declan Costello converted a penalty kick for Cloonfad United with seventy eight played.

St. John's Athletic and the Castleplunket side C P Ajax drew 0 – 0 at Lecarrow.
