Roscommon and District League Round up 19th February 2023

The Roscommon and District League Premier Division Championship is finely balanced with Boyle Celtic and Moore United the only two teams left in the title race. Boyle Celtic beat C P Ajax 4 – 0 at Boyle and they are three points ahead of Moore United but have a game more played.
While Boyle Celtic were the better side they were really tested by a good Castleplunket side. Jake Mc Crann finally broke the deadlock just before half time and Callum Andrews added a second for the winners with fifty five played. Shane Battles and Callum Andrews added two late goals for Boyle Celtic and with just two league games to go they are slight favourite to win the Premier Championship.

In the bottom half of the Premier Division Kilkerrin United beat Ballaghaderreen 3 – 2 at Kilkerrin. Bruce Holton gave Ballaghaderreen a 1- 0 lead after twenty five minutes but Cian Carton volleyed an equaliser ten minutes later. Oisin Moran gave the home side a 2 – 1 lead with seventy played but Noel Deery levelled the game when he scored for Ballaghaderreen. Brian MC Dermott scored the winner for Kilkerrin United with eight minutes left to play.

Ballinasloe Town beat Moylough 3 – 0 at Moylough. Ryan Burke scored one before Josh Mc Carthy added two more for the winners.

In Division 1 Cloonfad United closed the gap on Leaders Shiven Rovers to two points but have a game more played. They beat third placed Ballinagare/ Manor United 5 – 0 at Ballinagare.
Conor Flynn opened the scoring after nine minutes and the home side had a player sent off five minutes later. Conor Flynn added a second with eighteen played. The home side saw the ball rebound off the Cloonfad goal post on two occasions before half time but in the second half Conor Flynn completed his hat trick before Luke Ruane and Dean Coyne added two more for the winners.

Ballymoe F C were 3 – 0 winners over Roscommon United at Roscommon. Ger Connaughton Damien Goggins and Dan Malone scored for the winners with all three goals coming in the second half.

Dysart were beaten 3 – 2 at home by Ballinasloe Towns second side. Warren Coyle scored two and Cameron O Leary one for the leaders. Ronan Doyle and Peter Cummins scored for Dysart.

In the only game played in Division 2 leaders St Cuans / Ahascragh United drew 1- 1 away to second placed Glen Celtic. Liam O Connor scored early in the second half for St Cuans/ Ahascragh United and a late Strike from Aaron Comer won a point for the Glenamaddy side.

Castlerea Celtic won the Women’s Trophy final following a penalty shootout. The teams were well matched and chances were few and far between. The winners were the better side in the first half and Holly Hopkins gave them a 1 – 0 lead with twenty five played. Colemanstown were much better in the second half and level with three played thanks to an Issa Harun volley. Both teams failed to score in the remainder of normal or extra time but in a nail biting and excellent penalty shootout Castlerea Celtic came out on top on a 4 – 3 score line.

In the Women’s League Kilkerrin United had a vital 4 – 0 win away to Ballaghaderreen. Caitlin Boyle scored two and Aishling Walsh and Caoimhe Boyle added one each

Boyle Celtic were 3 – 2 winners over league Leaders Cam Celtic at a wind swept Cam. Maeve Brogan gave the visitors the lead after ten minutes of play but Katie Nolan Levelled the game fifteen minutes later and the same played added a second with a splendid free kick before half time. Boyle had the aid of the wind in the second half and Maeve Brogan and Katie Walsh scored their goals.

In the reserve Division Moore United beat Shiven Rovers 3 – 0 at Moore.
With just two minutes played Paul Whelan put Davy Griffin through on goal to give Moore a 1 – 0 lead.
Shane Kenny made 2 – 0 with twenty five played following a neat pass by Mark Lennon. Paddy Reilly made two good saves and Mike Carthy cleared a ball off the line to keep Shiven at bay before Francis Lennon scored a third goal for Moore United following a Paul Whelan corner kick.
Ballinagare/ Manor United drew 0 – 0 at Ballinagare.
