Roscommon and District League
Round Up 9th April 2023
Congratulations are extended to Moore United who were crowned Roscommon and District League Premier Division Champions following a 1 – 0 win over previous Champions Boyle Celtic at Boyle. Both teams went into this game undefeated having won nine of their twelve League games and while Moore United needed a win Boyle Celtic just needed a draw to retain the title.
In the first half Moore concentrated on a tight defence with Adam Mc Manus and Graham Petit were particularly impressive. While Boyle did create a few good chances they were unable to breach a well drilled Moore defence. After the break Moore changed their tactics and pressed the Boyle defence from the start. Jack Nevin and his brother and team Captain Charles created many problems for the Boyle defence and with just seven minutes played they took the lead. Moore won a corner kick which was taken by Shane Petit. Jason Ryan headed the ball on and Rian Carpenter was first to react and he chested the ball to the Boyle net. While Boyle Celtic went all out for an equaliser and Michael Corrigan came within a whisker of levelling the game great credit must go to the Moore defence and midfield who saw the game out and the League Champions Cup returning to Moore for the first time since 2003.

Elsewhere in the League Moylough 79 beat Kilkerrin United 2 – 1 at Kilkerrin. Thomas Shaughnessy and Cathal Donnellan gave Moylough a 2 – 0 after fifteen minutes of play and while Oisin Moran pulled one back for Kilkerrin United with thirty played they failed to get an equaliser.

Castlerea Celtic beat neighbours C P Ajax 1 – 0 at Tarmon. Both teams are safely in mid table and the points were of no real value to either teams. The teams fielded some of their younger players and overall it was an entertaining game. Thomas Regan scored the winner for Castlerea Celtic with thirty minutes played.

In Division 1 Cloonfad United played league Champions Shiven Rovers at Cloonfad. Shiven Rovers had already wrapped up the Division 1 title but Cloonfad United needed a point to be certain of the runners up trophies. Shiven Rovers got off to a good start and were 2 – 0 ahead at half time thanks to goals from Daragh Murphy.
Shane Fagan and Robert Heneghan replied for Cloonfad United in the second half to finish second in Division 1

Ballymoe F C beat Ballinasloe Town “B” 2 – 1 at Ballymoe. Wayne Coyne gave Ballinasloe Town an early lead but Daniel Malone had the sides level at the break. Daniel added a second midway through the second half and Ballymoe took all three points from their last League game of the season.

Cam Celtic and Dunmore Town drew 3 – 3 at Cam. Dunmore raced into an early lead through a splendid Ethan Coen strike from twenty five meters. A good passing move resulted in a Declan Forde header being tipped onto the Cam cross bar by their keeper but Tom Byrne followed up to make it . 0 for Dunmore. Cam Celtic pulled one back before half time and while Ben Glynn added a third for Dunmore Cam Celtic never gave up and scored two more to level the game before the end. David Cunniffe scored two and Gavin Byrne one for Cam Celtic.

In the Division 1 Cup Ballymoe F C beat Roscommon United 5 – 1 at Ballymoe on Friday evening. Within seconds of the start of the game Patryk Pietrazk gave the Town side a 1 – 0 lead. Daniel Malone had the side’s level at the break and Jack Donnellan Daniel Malone and two late goals from Damien Goggins secured Ballymoe a place in the next round.

Shiven Rovers are through to the Joe Concannon sponsored Women’s Challenge Cup Final following a 2 – 0 win over Ballaghaderreen at Ballaghaderreen. The Newbridge side took the lead with six minutes played. Muirne Kilcommins got on the end of a Clara Lally cross to open the scoring. Both sides had chances to score but with sixty played a Laura Leahy corner kick was volleyed to the Ballaghaderreen net by Shannon Carter and Shiven Rovers held on for a place in the final.

In the Women’s Shield Semi Final Kilkerrin United beat St Cuans / Ahascragh United 4 – 1 at Ahascragh. Caitlin Boyle and Caoimhe Boyle scored two each for a very good Kilkerrin United side and Sinead Daly scored St Cuans Utd goal .
