The fourth round of the Connacht Cup took centre stage on Sunday and it was a day of mixed fortunes for teams from the Roscommon and District League

Pride of place must go to the Roscommon and District League side Cloonfad United who travelled to Sligo and beat the Sligo Super League leaders MCR FC 3 – 2and are now through to round.

The Sligo side dominated the early stages and were 1 – 0 ahead at the break. They added a second within a minute of the restart and looked home and dry. However Cloonfad had other ideas and Conor Flynn scored with a brilliantly taken free kick with fifty seven played. Conor Ruane levelled the game with seventy three played following a corner kick. With six minutes of normal time left to play Conor Flynn created an opening for his brother Darragh and he scored the winner from a very tight angle.

Ballinasloe Town failed to advance when beaten 4 – 0 at home by an Athenry side who are favourites to win this competition.

The Castleplunket side C P Ajax were involved in a real battle with the Galway Premier side West United. In a game that could have been won by either side it was West United who came out on a 2 – 1 score line. The winners went 2 – 0 up. Before a missed penalty kick was to prove costly for Castleplunket side. Paul Mee pulled a goal back with a stunning free kick with sixty played and while the home side had chances to level the game West United held out for a win.

In the Connacht Shield round 2 Ballinagare / Manor United were beaten 8- 7 in a penalty shootout away to the Mayo Side Conn Rangers. In a good game of football the Roscommon and District League Division 1 side were 2 – 1 ahead with five left to play only for the home side to convert a penalty kick and send the game to extra time. Vando and Aidan Dowd had earlier scored for Ballinagare Manor United.

Cam Celtic were beaten 4 – 1 by Maree / Oranmore B at Cam. The home side took an early lead when Darren Donnelly volleyed to the net following a corner kick. A much more experienced Galway side scored three before half time and added a fourth in the second half.

Ballymoe F C were beaten 7 – 2 at home by a good Salthill Devon second side. Despite missing a few players Ballymoe took an early lead through Damien Goggins but it didn’t get any better as the Galway side dominated the game afterwards. Damien Goggins added a second for Ballymoe but by then the result was not in doubt.

In the Premier Division of the Roscommon and District League title holders Boyle Celtic had an impressive 4 – 1 win over challengers St Johns Athletic at Boyle.
The visitors took an early lead through Jack O Beirne but Callum Andrews had the side’s level at half time. Michael Corrigan gave Boyle Celtic a 2 – 1 lead early in the second half and Finbar Cregg and Shane Battles added two more before the end.

Ballaghaderreen beat Skyvalley Rovers 4 – 1 at Ballaghaderreen. Danny Lynch scored early for Skyvalley Rovers but Sharoize Akram levelled the game just before half time. Cathal Horan gave the winners a 2 – 1 lead with sixty played and Chris Dunne added two more in the closing stages.

In the only game played in Division 2 Glen Celtic came from a goal down to beat St Johns athletic second side 4 -1 at Lecarrow. The home side were 1 – 0 up with twenty played thanks to Daniel O Brien but Ryan Duffy levelled the game just before half time. Ryan Duffy added his second just after the break and Ryan Mc Hugh and Jason Connelly added one each to secure a second place for the Glenamaddy side in the points table.

The Rahara v St Cuans / Ahascragh United game was postponed.

In the Women’s League Kilkerrin United were hoping to close the gap on the leaders to a single point when they played Boyle Celtic at Boyle. However they were held to a 2 – 2 draw by a determined Boyle Celtic side and are now three points behind Cam Celtic with a game more played. In an entertaining game Katie Walshe and Sinead Healy scored for Boyle Celtic and Ciara Boyle and Lynsey Noone replied for Kilkerrin United.

In the Women’s trophy Semi-Final first leg Castlerea Celtic beat Ballinasloe Town 5 – 1 at Ballinasloe. Sarah Diggins scored two and Holly Hopkins Clodagh Diggins and Rachel Gormley added one each for the Castlerea Celtic side.

Colemanstown F C beat St Cuans / Ahascragh United 4 – 3 at Colemanstown in the other Semi- Final. The visitors were 2 – 0 up at half time and added a third five minutes into the second half. However Rachel O Brien scored two and Sarah Kearney and Laura Keane added one each for the Colemanstown side before the end. Sinead Daly had earlier scored all three goals for St Cuans /Ahascragh United.
