Primary School Competitions Round-Up by Martin Conboy

By Admin 1

Loughlynn, Kilteevan, Brideswell and Glinsk were the big winners in boys and girls Primary school competitions.

The Roscommon League Schools competitions for all primary schools in the league came to a close on Tuesday 23rd June in Lecarrow after 16 days of matches in all categories: 2 teacher and 3/4 teacher small schools and some top schools 11-a-side competitions.

The big winners were Loughlynn NS who retained their 3/4 teacher seven-a-side boys A title beating Corrigeenroe, who were playing in their first final, on penalties. This was the 2nd year in a row that Loughlynn won on penalties as they beat Lisaniskea in 2014. Ian Burke was their hero saving two penalties and also playing superbly in normal time. He is a very talented goalkeeper.

Kilteevan won the 2 teacher boys 7-a-side A final, beating Granlahan 2-1 in a very good match, retaining the title they won in 2014. They were a goal down at half-time but scored 2 goals in the second half.Granlahan played very well but were just beaten by a late goal.

In the boys B final, Glinsk edged out Kilmurray after a close shave to win their first Roscommon League Trophy.

The 2 teacher girls A final saw Glinsk win for the first time when they defeated Woodbrook, who were playing in their first final. The score was 6-2 to Glinsk.

In the 3/4 teacher girls B final, Ballyfeeney won their first title beating a good Ballyleague team 2-1. They had the best player of the tournament in Edel McDonnell who is a super talent and a player of the future, hopefully in Irish colours!

The boys B final was a great game with Creggs and Curraghboy sharing 6 goals between them. Curraghboy won 4-2. For Creggs it was hard luck as they were also runners up in the FAI 5-a-side in March to Loughlynn.

The 11-a-side boys saw Clonakilla edge out Boyle 1-0 and they also had a good season winning in Connaught FAI competitions.

The last final played was the 2 teacher girls B final between Fairymount and Killina, played in very hot conditions. Fairymount won 3-1 after a good game.

After a long season and over 18 playing days, over 1,050 matches were played at all levels. We thank most sincerely our volunteers and referees: John Hannon, David Brady, Eamon Bolger, Cian Dervan, Aidan Kilcline, Jimmy Darcy, Sean Corcoran, David Kelly, Michael Lane, Michael Duffy, Peter Sherlock, Paddy McLoughlin, Andrew Thubron, Garrett Muldoon and Michelle and Kay in the office.

We congratulate all winners and thank all schools for their participation and their teachers and supporters who attended all matches.

We wish everyone a long and happy Summer break. Matches will resume on 8th September.

Thanking you,
Martin Conboy – Organiser, DSP
