Roscommon and District League Round Up.
Congratulations are extended to Shiven Rovers F C who won the Roscommon and District League Challenge Cup following a very impressive win over the League Champions and favourites Boyle Celtic.
Shiven Rovers, who celebrated their 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Club last week end, struggled early in the season in Division 1 but they gradually improved with every game as the season progressed. While finishing outside the Promotion places in Division 1 they knocked out three Premier sides amongst others to reach the final and even their own loyal supporters didn’t foresee a Cup final win. Shiven contested their first final in 1979 and following a replay they were beaten by Dubarry. Since then they lost two more finals but on Sunday those results were all forgotten as this team lifted the Cup.
Shiven started well but gradually the more experienced Boyle Celtic side with the aid of a strong gained control. However a great performance from the Shiven Rovers defence and their Keeper Shane Delaney kept the game scoreless until half time. The only goal of the game came after sixty five minutes when following a good passing move down the left side the ball reached substitute Matthew Barrett who rounded his marker before planting the ball in the Boyle Celtic net.
The goal was a great boost for the Newbridge based side and from then on they fought for every ball as if their lives depended on it. And all things considered especially their Manager Sean Gavin maybe there is some truth in that. A tired looking Boyle Celtic only rarely showed their ability but to be fair to them they were crowned League Champions just two weeks ago.
The former player and current Secretary of the Roscommon and District League Gerry Davis presented the Joes Bar Sponsored Challenge Cup to the winning Captain Keith Murphy
after the game.

Congratulations are extended to Ballinagare / Manor United who won the D K Shield final following a thrilling game against Ballaghaderreen “ B” at Lecarrow. The Ballaghaderreen Keeper Cian Galvin was in top form while Gerry Ward used all his experience and talent to win Ballinagare Manor United a well-deserved trophy. Aaron Dowd opened the scoring after fifty five minutes and Tom Ward added a second. Ballaghaderreen struck the cross bar on three different occasions and despite playing really well it was not their lucky day.

Ballinasloe Town are through to the Premier Division Cup final and a meeting with Boyle Celtic next weekend. They beat St Johns athletic 4 – 2 in a good game of football at the Curragh Grounds Ballinasloe. The Ballinasloe Town keeper John Cotter made a number of brilliant saves including a Tommy Hurley penalty kick which would have levelled the game.
Mike Lynch Ryan Burke Jordan O Leary and Kealen Cawley scored for Ballinasloe Town while Matthew Donnelly and his brother Dermott scored for St Johns Athletic.

Where next?
