Roscommon & District League Round Up by Vincent Brookes.

The third round of the Joe’s Bar sponsored Roscommon & District League Challenge Cup took centre stage this weekend with most of the games going ahead despite the bad weather.
The all Premier Division clash at Castlerea between Castlerea Celtic and Ballymoe FC went all the way to extra time before Castlerea Celtic came out on top on a 3 – 2 score-line. Over the last few seasons these teams were well matched with Ballymoe winning their most recent game in the Premier Division with the same score.

Castlerea Celtic started very well and were 2 – 0 up after sixteen minutes of play. Aaron McDermott and Jarlath Geraghty scored their goals. Damien Goggins scored his nineteenth goal of the season for Ballymoe ten minutes later and the sides were level halfway through the second half when Dean Muldoon scored for Ballymoe. The game could have been won by either side in normal time but with seven played in the first period of extra time Paul Mee struck the decider for the better Castlerea Celtic side and they now advance to the Quarter-Finals.

Cup holders St. Peter’s were made to battle all the way before beating Division One leaders Moylough 2 – 1 at the League Grounds, Lecarrow. Darragh Concannon converted a penalty kick for St. Peter’s with thirty-three played. Moylough ‘79 levelled the game early in the second half when a quick free kick and a cross from Pierce Townsend reached Aridas who volleyed to the St Peter’s net. With ten minutes remaining Michael Lee scored the winning goal for the Athlone side.

Premier side Ballinasloe Town beat Division One side Cam Celtic 3 – 0 at Ballinasloe. David Cullen, Liam Lynch and Alan Duffy scored for the winners with all three goals coming in the first half.

Moore United advanced to the next round with a comfortable 2 – 0 win over Dysart at Dysart. Leading goal scorer Andy Nevin gave the winners a 1 - 0 lead after seven minutes of play in the second half and the same player won and converted a penalty kick just before the end of the game.

Skyvalley Rovers failed to make the Quarter-Finals when beaten on penalties by St. John’s Athletic in terrible weather conditions at Onagh Park, Taughmaconnell.
While the home side created many scoring chances they were denied time and time again by the excellent St. John’s Keeper, Sean Coyle. They finally scored with sixty-five played when a good cross by Emmet Kelly reached David Grehan who headed to the St. John’s net. Within a minute the visitors were level when Christopher Hurley won and converted a free kick. The game went to a penalty shoot out and the Division One side came out on top on a 4 – 3 scoreline. Chris Hurley, Jamie Heffernan, Derek Doyle and Garry Stergron scored for the winners while Tom Butler, Garry Patton and Cathal Kelly replied for the losers.

Boyle Celtic advanced to the Quarter-Finals thanks to a hard earned 2 – 1 win over fellow Premier Division side Cloonfad United at Cloonfad. The winners got off to the perfect start when Michael Corrigan gave them the lead after five minutes. Corrigan added his second with sixty-five played and while Tiernan Murphy pulled a goal back for Cloonfad United with three minutes of normal time left to play it came too late for them to get an equaliser.

Congratulations are extended to the Casterea Celtic’s second side who were crowned Killeen Sports Grounds Division Two Champions over the weekend. Giles McDonagh’s men are four points clear at the top of the Division Two points table with just a game left to play. They were presented with the Division Two League Trophy by the Roscommon and District League Secretary, Conor Fahy at Castlerea on Saturday.

Roscommon United remain in second place behind the leaders Castlerea Celtic after they beat the Castleblakeney side St. Cuan’s United 7 – 0 at Lecarrow. Jamie Bracken brought his goal tally to twenty four for the season when he scored five and Kevin Martin and Paul McHugh added one each.

Cloonfad United are in third place following their 4 – 1 win over Ballymoe at Cloonfad.
Padraig Miskell, Kurt Reinhardt, Cormack Costello and Sonnie McAnulty scored for Cloonfad United and Oran McGeeney replied for the losers.

Castlerea Celtic received a walk over from Shiven Rovers.
