Roscommon and District League Round Up by Vincent Brookes.

Ballinasloe Town failed to make it through to the last thirty two of the New Balance FAI Junior Cup when beaten 1 - 0 at home by the Mayo Superleague side Westport United.
The home side played with a strong wind and rain at their back in the first half but only created one good scoring chance. With twenty three played Damien Finn won a corner kick which was taken by Mark Duffy with the Westport defence somehow keeping a close range header from Joe Woods and a Des Hope shot from crossing the goal line. The Ballinasloe goalkeeper Padraig Maloney had almost nothing to do in this half.

After the break Westport pushed forward and were rewarded when they scored after seventeen minutes of play. A Darren Hoban header was well parried by Maloney and he then kept out a shot by Jack Murphy before Mark McDonagh scored from close range. Following good work by Cormack Clogher, Mark Richardson and Mark Duffy Ballinasloe town won a penalty hick for hand ball with thirty seven played but Liam Lynch shot over the bar from the penalty spot. With almost the last kick of the game the ball broke to Mark Richardson but he volleyed wide with the goal at his mercy.
Final score: Ballinasloe Town 0 Westport United 1.

In the Raftery’s Oakland Hotel Premier Division, Strokestown United had their first win of the season when they beat Dysart 4 - 1 at Dysart. Darren Clabby and Kevin Finn scored two each for the winners while Darragh Keegan replied for Dysart.

Kilkerrin United's good run continued with a 3 - 2 win over Cloonfad United at Kilkerrin. Their leading goal-scorer Aidan Kitt got his hat trick in the first half to give a very determined Kilkerrin United side a 3 - 0 half time lead. Tiernan Murphy pulled a goal back for Cloonfad United after fifty-one minutes and Conor Flynn reduced the deficit to a single goal with two minutes left to play but Kilkerrin held on for a well-deserved win.

Ballymoe FC came from a goal down to draw 1 -1 with Shiven Rovers at the League Grounds, Lecarrow. Keith Murphy converted a penalty kick for the Newbridge side with sixty played. Leading goal-scorer Damien Goggins won a point for Ballymoe when he scored with five minutes left to play.

In the Norio’s Takeaway Division One, CP Ajax closed the gap on leaders Moylough ‘79 following a 4 - 2 win over fellow contenders St. John’s Athletic at Tarmon. Daniel Connolly scored three and Kieran Harkin one for the Castleplunket side. Tommy and Chris Hurley replied for the Lecarrow side.

Cam Celtic beat Dunmore Town 2 - 1 at Cam. Gareth Mulligan and Robbie Fallon scored for Cam Celtic and Thomas Kilgarriff scored for the losers.

In the top of the table clash in the Killeen Sports Grounds Division Two, Glen Celtic and Castlerea Celtic B drew 1 - 1 at Glenamaddy. Castlerea Celtic were on top in the first half but could not break down a resolute Glen defence. After the break the sides were well matched with Castlerea taking the lead and Glen Celtic getting a deserved equaliser near the end. A neat pass from Kevin Flanagan created an opening for Seamus Stenson to score for the Castlerea side and Michael Heneghan replied for Glen Celtic near the end of the game.

Shiven Rovers B kept their hopes of catching the leaders alive when they beat Cloonfad United B 1 - 0 at Newbridge. Anthony Geraghty scored the only goal of the game with sixty five minutes played.

Roscommon United received a walk over Ballymoe FC’s second side.
